The Scandinavian concept of hygge was a trending topic a few years ago, sparking a flurry of blogs and articles encouraging readers to light up a cardamom-scented candle to melt their winter worries away. Here in Minnesota, we know that the philosophy is far more than a fad; it's a lifestyle. January is the coldest month of the year in this great state, and we understand the importance of bringing comfort, warmth, and connection into our lives and homes this time of year.

Find my top tips on Home Updates to Create a Cozy Haven in your own home and check out my favorite local Minneapolis recommendations for winter activities to fully enjoy the local hygge lifestyle in Minneapolis.

1) Relax into the Rituals of Watershed Spa

Indulge in the calm of dim lights, zen music, and the many amenities of the first local communal bathhouse of its kind at Watershed Spa. Choose between a massive warm soaking tub, sauna and steam areas, a rejuvenating cold plunge pool, shower and salt scrub, or just chill out in the recharging room. Your self guided 2.5 hour experience allows you to follow a suggested cycle or use the elements in whatever order you'd like. Book your bathing ritual here.

2) Experience Candlelit Magic During the Luminary Loppet on Lake of the Isles

This annual winter celebration lights up a winding trail through the frozen Lake of the Isles. Enjoy a warm beverage and take in the unique ice features and installations as you walk, snowshoe, or ski your way to the REI Luminary Party outdoor concert. Tickets for this one night only event are available on the Loppet Foundation website here.

3) Enjoy a Fireside Cocktail at PS Steak Lounge

Nothing delivers cozy vibes quite like a roaring fire, and the beautiful lounge at PS Steak, just off Loring Park, offers an atmosphere that can't be beat. Of course, they have incredible steak but don't sleep on the lamb burgers, steak tartar, seared foie gras, and flaming baked Alaska. The residents at 510 Groveland are lucky to have this gem just downstairs!

4) Sweat it Out at the Superior Sauna Cabanas at Pryes Brewing

Grab some friends to soak in the steam and heat in the nordic sauna collection from Superior Sauna & Steam at Pryes Brewing through April. Cabanas accommodate 6-8 people and include cold showers, plus private bonfire lounges where you can enjoy food & beverages from the Pryes kitchen. Cabanas are available to rent for private parties or as community steam experiences. Learn more and book here.

5) Heat Up In The Kitchen with Cooks of Crocus Hill

Learn a new seasonal recipe and sharpen your culinary skills at one of the many classes offered at Cooks of Crocus Hill. While you are there, don't miss out on the opportunity to grab some incredible pastries from Bellacoure Bakery. Book a class at their North Loop location here.

1) Find Zen at the Hewing's Thermaculture Thursdays

The Hewing rooftop is a hygge haven boasting a sauna, hot tub, lounge, and stunning cityscape views. Tickets are available each Thursday for a guided sauna meditation followed by a hot tub soak and socializing. Tickets sell out quickly so keep your eye on the Hewing's event calendar here or book yourself a little staycation to take advantage of these cozy amenities anytime.

Our city offers countless ways to find warmth, connection, and joy in the coldest months. These local gems remind us that Minneapolis doesn't just endure the cold season; we've mastered the art of making it truly magical.
